Week 1
The Art of Gold

Like King Midas with his magic touch, we will turn all of our projects into gold!  Gold is the color of light.  It illuminates the spirit and the senses.  In this workshop, we will design illuminated lettering, create a manuscript of a personal narrative embellished by calligraphy, bead a necklace/bracelet, tool a golden sun in foiled metal, and paint an illuminated painting on glass  inspired by the artist, Gustav Klimt.  We will examine how gold was used throughout history by artisans and painters alike.
Week 2
Artists Books

Artists books are works of art realized in the form of a book.  They are a harmonious blend of design and content and are employed in a range of forms including fold outs, pop ups, tunnels, accordion folds and fluttering flags.  In this workshop, we will design and create several styles of artists books, marrying words and image in perfect balance.  For inspiration, we will look at literature, poetry, personal narrative, and nature.

Do not be surprised if your book is created in a matchbox, a dental floss container or even a candy bar!
Week 3
The Art of Paper Crafts

Paper is one of the most versatile of all art materials.  It’s easily available, and comes in such a variety of textures and colors.  We will fabricate a mask, create a piece of jewelry, build a picture frame, mold a fruit bowl, watch a crane beat it’s wings, originate a figurative sculpture and even make our own paper!  Cut, score, fold, tear, sculpt, mold and fold – experience the magic of paper.

Week 4
Painting and Drawing on Location

You will have the experience of gathering up your art supplies, and drawing and painting in the great outdoors, better known as “plein air” painting. For inspiration, we will take field trips to Grounds for Sculpture, the Princeton Art Museum, Sandy Hook and scenic favorite spots in Metuchen.  Reworking some of our sketches into murals and paintings will be spent in the Westerhoff Studio.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, sun screen, bug spray and, of course, your creativity!
